The Finland-Zanzibar Marine Spatial Planning for a Sustainable Blue Economy
(FinZa-MSuBE) is a project led by Novia University of Applied Sciences (Novia
UAS) in Finland, in cooperation with The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) in
Tanzania. The project aims at developing participants’ competences and build
capacity in Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) through the implementation of two (2)
courses which will be conducted partly online and onsite. The project partners
will leverage the use of innovative pedagogical methods such as the MSP
challenge to further develop and strengthen participants’ skills by exposing
them to the local context and environment in Finland and Zanzibar. In addition,
the project will also include discussions with input for curriculum development
as well as students’ and teachers’ mobility to SUZA and Novia UAS. Lectures and
discussions by industry experts in marine and natural resources management are
also expected.
The exchange visit to SUZA aims to expose students and teachers from Novia UAS
to a different coastal ecosystem with its challenges and opportunities while
the exchange visit to Novia UAS will expose students and lecturers from SUZA to
the Finnish and the Baltic coastal ecosystem and to gain an understanding of
how Finland successfully manages its natural resources. Tanzania is currently
in the planning phase of the implementation of their Marine Spatial Planning
and therefore in need of providing education to train students as future
professionals to achieve a sustainable blue economy. This project is thus a
response to this need. As a result of this cooperation, the following are
expected:
- Improved competences in MSP and deeper understanding of the local context in
Zanzibar and Finland.
- Improved MSP courses and benchmark curricula in Sustainable Coastal
Management.
- Strengthened global competences, enhanced multicultural collaboration, and
improved cultural awareness for students.
- Publication of lessons learnt, and presentation of project results in blogs
and during seminars and forums.
- Renewed cooperation through other means of funding.
Through this project, the partners hope to contribute to the achievement of SDG
4 – quality education, and SDG 14 - life below water; and to also promote
sustainability in the communities through education.
