Boost Nordic Biogas

Interreg Aurora

Period: 15.12.2022 - 31.12.2025

Innehåll: The biogas system involves many parts of society and produces several societal
benefits and affects all the UN's global sustainability goals. It can
contribute to sustainable waste management, sustainable food production, local
cycles of nutrients, circular economy, resource efficiency, security of supply
in terms of energy and food, local jobs. Northern Finland and Sweden have a
long history of producing biogas of organic waste, whereas in Northern Norway
implementations are just starting. This project is concerned with knowledge
transfer across the border and between biogas producers and researchers. The
northern region shares challenges in common, such as the cold climate and
spread population. Different solutions and technologies are needed for those
used in southern regions. There is also untapped potential in organic wastes in
the North. After extracting biogas from the waste, digestate remains, which
contains valuable nutrients. The economics of biogas production can be improved
by developing commercial uses for this digestate, such as a fertiliser that is
based on local, renewable resources and which increases self-sufficiency.
Boost Nordic Biogas is a cross-border project, with the objective to improve
the economic viability of biogas production in the Aurora region, enhance its
efficiency and facilitate new installations. There is a need to improve the
regions self-sufficiency regarding renewable energy and fertilizer, which
biogas can contribute to. This will be achieved by enhancing the research
capabilities of the target group, performing applied research, networking with
established and new biogas producers, and working with the currently identified
main issues. The activities consist of sharing of best practices, new business
models for circularity, new processes for addressing northern challenges such
as dry digestion, enhancing biogas production by R&D and uptake of new
technologies, laboratory and field experiments, and dissemination of results.
