Wind CoE - "Nordic Wind Energy Center"

Interreg Botnia Atlantica Osterbottens forbund

Period: 1.12.2015 - 1.6.2018

Content: To facilitate the development of wind power in the Nordic countries,
comprehensive cross-border collaboration between researchers and industry
experts is needed.. Processes of planning, development and operation of
costeffective wind energy in cold climates are challenging and the need for
cooperation between regional institutions / industriesare needed to cover the
various areas ranging from technical, environmental, economic and social
aspects. To accomplish improved and coordinated activities, the ability to
learn from each other by sharing existing knowledge and use of existing
infrastructure in the regions, a center of excellence for wind energy is
required.

To enable sustainable development of the energy sector and a better
understanding of wind energy in cold climates, knowledge of the regional
geographical diversity and the complementary competencies are a crucial. In
order to enable and ensure the development of sustainable and cost-effective
wind energy in cold climates we also need some research issues resolved.

The aim of the project is to combine the forces of the national research units
in order to increase the share of wind power onto the grid. Work will be
performed in the three different regions (Ostrobothnia - Finland, Nordland -
Norway, Västerbotten - Sweden) and their colleges in the wind energy sector.
The production chain for wind, social acceptance and purpose of various
techniques must be simulated for a better understanding of the effects on
operation & maintenance. The goal of the project is to create tools that are
beneficial for the sustainable development of wind power.

Research collaboration combines the strongest research groups in the energy and
simulation technology in the regions and together creates methods to research
the future production of energy from renewable sources. With the developed
competence center, it is possible to deal with wind energy issues in cold
climates from a multidisciplinary perspective and work on these issues will
facilitate the sustainable development of wind power in the Nordic countries.
