OFFwind

About the project

We want to provide both planning authorities and private businesses with valuable knowhow on the impact of the arctic conditions on offshore windfarms – from the planning and development phase to operation and maintenance of the farms.

OFFwind creates crossborder knowledge networks enhancing the green transition in the program area by providing applied research and new knowledge necessary for the establishment of offshore windpower parks in the Aurora area. OFFwind uses shared regional research infrastructure through crossborder cooperation between the participating regions to enhance the uptake of advanced offshore technologies and the development of innovative methods, products, and services.

OFFwind will provide solutions, through case studies, to the limiting arctic challenges caused by harsh weather conditions (ice, wind, waves, snow) by developing methods & models to reduce the effect of these; deicing methods, ice mechanical models for ice-structural interaction & dimensioning criteria, assessing wind and wave forces and loads, seabed conditions and access to farms and use of zero-carbon emitting building materials.

Project goal

The overall objective of OFFwind is to contribute to boost the uptake of offshore wind energy in the Aurora program area.

The offshore areas of the Gulf of Bothnia and the Norwegian Sea outside Northern Norway provide many potential areas for offshore wind parks. However, there are ice and other arctic challenges which must be overcome to fully utilize this potential. The OFFwind project aims at contributing to overcoming these challenges. Methods and models to reduce the impact of the harsh weather conditions will be developed and shared.
