Local Economy
A local economy is not an isolated system, but part of the global economy. However, it is an economic system where key social and environmental factors are strongly related to a specific community. To define a local economy, we can consider several factors, such as: How much of the revenue generated by economic activities stays within the community, the degree of local ownership over capital goods, the level of decision-making control over production, and the proportion of production inputs—such as labor and natural resources—sourced from within the community. Additionally, it is important to assess how emissions and waste are managed, and the impact they have both within and outside the community. All these elements are critical for evaluating whether the local economy is also a resilient and sustainable system.
The Local Economy team at Novia UAS has an initial emphasis on natural fibers produced by small and medium-sized businesses in rural areas. By also engaging with local consumers, we help raise awareness of the social and environmental impacts of their choices. In collaboration with local producers, we explore strategies to enhance the resilience and sustainability of value chains. The team also engages in projects and research concerning, for example, circular economy practices, nature-based solutions, and greenhouse gas mitigation strategies.
We are eager to co-operate across disciplines, on local, national, and international levels. Please be in contact! The Research Theme is lead by Team Leader Ulrika Dahlberg.
