The coastal zone, where the sea and the land meet, is the core of the Blue ecosystems team. We work with applied projects related to biology, ecosystem services, ecology, biodiversity, and conservation of ecosystems both in lakes, rivers, wetlands and offshore. All aquatic ecosystems are threatened today in some way, by eutrophication, warming, acidification, algae blooms, hypoxia, organic pollutants or coastal construction and shipping. More research, monitoring, and restoration are urgently needed to preserve what is left.

The Blue Ecosystem team produces new knowledge by using long-term data, conducting field work, laboratory experiments and analyses. We also do monitoring and biodiversity inventories. Outreach is very important to us, and we aim to communicate in several channels. We are always looking for new collaborators, both international and domestic.

The Blue Ecosystem Team's Team Leader is Jonna Engström-Öst.
