MAP-UP-P2X - Mapping CO2 Streams in Ostrobothnia: Unlocking Potential for P2X Economy
Period: 9.1.2024 - 31.12.2025
Content: Beneficial renewable energy creates the prerequisite to, together with captured carbon dioxide from existing industrial facilities, produce synthetic fuels in an environmentally friendly manner locally. The project will therefore thoroughly investigate the possibilities for regional use and further processing of both carbon dioxide (CO2), oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2) regionally for industry and society's needs to replace peat energy production. The goal of the project is to create a better understanding through raw material flows in various industries, waste management and material recovery processes. This is to be able to assess which strategic and economic processes are important to prioritize in order to utilize and refine H2, O2 and also CO2, in a way that really creates added value for industry and society regionally. This is to accelerate development through increased knowledge of system solutions used in sustainable economy and to increase readiness to test and apply these new technologies in the region, the project contributes to opportunities for new business activities.Technological development is progressing rapidly and the project maps out the various technologies that are available for the separation of carbon dioxide and the production of hydrogen gas. How far along are these various technologies in the development phase (TRL, Technology Readiness level)? What is the demand for products with higher levels of hydrocarbons, environmental analysis (alcohol, acids, nitrogen, phosphorus, ammonia, fertilizers, coal, e-fuels such as synthetic diesel etc)? The investigation should clarify potential demand in relation to potential production capacity for various possible green synthetic products. Create basis for future investment plans, budgets and decisions in the various interest organizations. Contribute knowledge in the pursuit of carbon neutrality. Acquired knowledge should be used in decisions that aim to replace the need for peat in current energy production solutions and contribute to phasing out the use of peat in future electricity and heat production solutions.
