In the transition to a carbon-neutral society, circular business models play a key role. At Novia's Faculty of Business, sustainability is at the core of our research. We focus on how small and medium-sized enterprises in coastal and rural regions can develop and implement circular business models that both strengthen their competitiveness and contribute to sustainable societal development.

By applying the Helix models, we create innovative environments where research, industry, and society collaborate to drive the transition to a circular economy. We use design thinking to develop practical solutions that help companies integrate sustainability into their business strategies. Special emphasis is placed on adapting circular business models to regional conditions and resources.

Our research examines how digitalization can support the transition to circular business models in traditional industries. We study value chains from a holistic perspective to identify opportunities for resource efficiency and innovation. A central theme is the development of local cycles where companies can collaborate to maximize resource use and minimize waste. We also research how socially sustainable entrepreneurship can be integrated into circular business models.

Research results are continuously transformed into concrete tools and methods that help regional companies in their sustainability work. We develop models for how smaller companies can evaluate and improve their environmental impact while strengthening their profitability. Through our work, we support companies in identifying new business opportunities within the circular economy and managing the challenges of transition.

Our research is built on close collaboration between higher education and industry, where we together explore and develop future sustainable business models. We act as a knowledge bridge between the research front and local companies, creating platforms where companies can learn from each other and develop joint solutions.  Through this collaboration, we contribute to building a resilient and sustainable business community in our region.
