Power of Potatoes

Power of Potatoes (PoP)

About the project

The plan of the project is to make an up-to-date analysis of waste from the potato industry in terms of volumes and its current status as a resource or waste. The project will investigate the economic benefits of making green fuel from potato waste and potato spill, to compensate for the loss of peat in the energy production sector. The fuel could be used as heat in the real estate sector or as locally produced green fuel in the transport sector.

It is known that various energy products can be made from potato waste, including biogas, ethanol, methanol or potentially synthetic fuels. Due to increased energy prices, greater need for self-sufficient energy, stress on the agricultural sector and the phasing out of peat, an up-to-date analysis is needed.

The project is financed by the Just Transition Fund (JTF), which is announced by the Regional council of Ostrobothnia. The project owner is Novia University of Applied Sciences and the project started 01.05.2024.

Project goal

In the project, end products and technical solutions will be compared on the basis of which end product provides the highest revenue, the least environmental impact and the lowest investment cost.
As a result, the plan is to show an economically viable investment plan for a recommended production plant.

The goal is to better utilize waste, develop alternative forms of energy production in Ostrobothnia, strengthen self-sufficiency, create conditions for new green business activities locally in the region and, in the long run, minimize the total production of carbon dioxide.
