The conference “Mediated Geographies: Exploring the Dynamic Nexus of Media, Environment, and Place” invites you to a two-day event to discuss the relationship between regions and various types of media. The conference will be held at Campus Allegro in Jakobstad, Finland on October 2-3.

The conference is the highlight of the joint project “FilmInd - Indian Film Industry as a Driver of New Socio-Economic Connections between India and Europe,” which ran from 2019 to 2023. In conjunction with the conference, the book release of Film and Place in an Intercultural Perspective, edited by Krzysztof Stachowiak, Hania Janta, Jani Kozina, and Therese Sunngren-Granlund, published by Routledge, will also be celebrated. The book is available open access.

The conference offers an in-depth look at Indian film with a keynote lecture by Professor Ranjani Mazumdar, titled “Topographical Motivations in Contemporary Bombay Cinema.” Professor Mazumdar is also the founder of India’s first female film collective.

“Ranjani Mazumdar is a pioneer in Indian film, and her research on how film can influence and depict urban environments is fascinating. I look forward to discussions on how film productions can act as a catalyst for regional development and create new socio-economic opportunities,” says Therese Sunngren-Granlund, Research Manager at Novia UAS.

The program will also include examples on how media can impact regions with examples from Slovenia, Switzerland, Iceland, and Finland.

The conference is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into how film can promote tourism and the economy in regions, as well as what data, tools, and strategies regions, companies, and organizations need to attract film productions, investments, and create new creative networks.

The conference is jointly organized by Novia University of Applied Sciences, Anton Melik Geographical Institute, ZRC SAZU in Slovenia, University of Poznan in Poland, and University of Basel in Switzerland.
