On September 19th, 2024, Dr. Jorge Gómez-Paredes at Novia University of Applied Sciences chaired a session at the 12th International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD). The ICSD is an annual conference that serves as a platform for academia, government, civil society, UN agencies, and the private sector to share practical solutions aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference brings together over 2,000 students, faculty, and professionals from more than 80 countries, both in-person in New York and online. It features keynote addresses from world leaders, CEOs, and United Nations Officials, as well as more than 300 presentations from academia, civil society, and government.

The theme of this year’s conference was “Solutions for the Future!”, which included a high-level ,in-person Pre-Summit of the Future Event.

Session “3D” was on “Energy transitions within complex social-ecological systems and a global economy”, was chaired by Novia UAS’ Dr. Jorge Gómez-Paredes (RDI Team Leader on Energy Transition) and co-chaired by Dr. Alex Godoy-Faúndez (Climate Policy Advisor for the Government of Chile, Professor at Chile’s UDD University and researcher at Harvard University).

The discussion highlighted the multifaceted nature of the energy transition challenge and emphasized the need for comprehensive solutions.

This session included presentations on:

  • “Foresight for a Sustainable Future: Key Messages for Achieving Net-Zero Emissions in APEC by 2050”
  • “Energy Transition Laws of Africa in the Global Race to Net Zero Emissions”
  • “Phasing out fuel subsidies in Colombia: opportunities and challenges to establish an eco-social contract”
  • “Reimagining Energy Justice: Towards a Global South Approach in Latin America”
  • “Navigating the Energy Transition: A Spanish Perspective on Renewable Energy Deployment with the Territory”
  • “What is a sustainable battery? Towards a holistic sustainability assessment of lithium-ion batteries and their supply chains”
