Chanika Jayawardana, Sustainable Coastal Management
"Novia UAS in Raseborg, which is located near the coast provides an ideal setting for studying sustainable coastal management comfortably for students"
Who are you?
Hi, I'm Chanika Jayawardana, a first-year student at Novia University of Applied Sciences.
What do you study and why did you choose this field?
I’m enrolled in the Sustainable Coastal Management degree program, where I’m gaining in-depth knowledge about coastal ecosystems and sustainable management practices. This program equips me to work with dedication and expertise in coastal management and conservation.
Coming from Sri Lanka, a beautiful island rich in natural resources, I've seen firsthand the challenges of environmental protection without a strong, structured system. Despite my passion for protecting our coastal areas, Sri Lanka currently lacks comprehensive pathways to pursue environmental degrees and careers. I aspire to help integrate environmental and economic strategies to ensure sustainable coastal management in my country and the world, benefiting both current and future generations. I am committed to actively contributing to environmental protection.
What did you do before starting your studies at Novia?
Before moving to Finland to study at Novia, I worked as a government officer focused on economic and social development in urban areas. I earned a degree in Business Management in Sri Lanka and became a chartered professional in Human Resource Management. With over twelve years of work experience in HR, business management, and marketing, I bring a broad skill set to my current studies.
What is the best thing about your studies?
In my experience, traditional education places heavy emphasis on theoretical knowledge. Here at Novia, however, education is much more hands-on. We have practical learning experiences and frequent field visits that reinforce theoretical concepts. We not only learn through presentations but also see real-world applications, interpret data through visual aids like graphs, and use advanced equipment.
Although the subject of coastal management is new to me, I’m excited to learn and ask questions, especially during fieldwork. The lecturers are approachable, knowledgeable, and encourage open discussion. Most importantly, Novia respects students’ time and skills. Deadlines and course plans are clear and future oriented.
What are your plans after graduation?
With my background in business management, combined with my new knowledge of sustainable coastal management, I am confident that I can contribute significantly to Finland’s economy and environmental strategies globally.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about studying at Novia UAS?
Finland is globally recognized for its environmental dedication, offering clean water to all citizens, a testament to its commitment to sustainability. Studying in a country with a strong environmental focus is incredibly inspiring.
I’ve always valued smart financial planning, and Finland offers high-quality education at an affordable cost, making it a great investment in one’s future. Among the options, Novia offers a variety of degree programmes for higher education.
