Mårten Storbacka has been named Alumni of the Year at Novia UAS

CEO Mårten Storbacka is the driving force behind the successful We-Tech Solutions, a growth company specializing in energy-efficient solutions for the maritime industry through innovative systems that utilize technologies such as variable frequency drives and energy management systems. Storbacka is an engineer (YH) from Novia's electrical engineering program in 1997, and he also holds a higher YH degree from Novia in technology-based leadership from 2009.

"Our warmest congratulations to Mårten Storbacka. Through the Alumni of the Year award, we want to highlight the valuable work our alumni do and their significant contributions to society. Mårten is an excellent example of the competence and commitment that our university stands for. We hope the award inspires and encourages our current students to make a positive impact in their future careers," says president Örjan Andersson.

Storbacka founded WE Tech Solutions in 2010 and has over 25 years of experience in the marine industry. Under his leadership, the company has grown significantly, employing many engineers from Novia. The company has contributed to reducing emissions and operating costs through innovative technologies such as variable frequency drives and energy management systems. The company has also expanded globally and collaborates with major players such as Mitsui & Co. Ltd to promote zero-emission shipping.

I can attest that having an excellent electrical engineering education as a foundation, combined with further studies in leadership, provides a solid base to build upon. If you mix in entrepreneurship, work experience, and hard work – well, then it can lead to just about anything", says Mårten Storbacka

Many wanted to nominate alumni for the award "We are pleased with all the nominations that came in. We have many talented and successful alumni out in the regions," says Alumni Coordinator Bella Alén.

About the award

• The public had the opportunity to nominate candidates during the nomination period from October 1 to November 30, 2024.
• The award was chosen by a nomination committee at Novia consisting of the president, vice president, deans, head of communication, and alumni coordinator.
• Criteria: The alumni is a person who is driven in their industry or engaged in the community. The alumni has maintained contact with the university after graduation and participated in alumni activities, development of the university, or in other ways supported and promoted Novia.
