The degree title is Master of Engineering and the extension of the studies are 60 ECTS. In 2021, Novia UAS offers a renewed curriculum, with a distinct profile in intelligent systems and machine learning techniques. The degree programme is located in Vaasa.
The Master’s degree programme is designed for the professional engineer who wants to deepen his or her knowledge and understanding of the methods and possibilities of modern automation and intelligent systems. The student will study automation and control both on a theoretical level and on a practical level – learning to design, test and implement automation systems and how to apply the techniques of data-driven decision making. A special emphasis is put on the use of machine learning methods in automation and control and the study of intelligent systems.

The language of instruction is English.
Studies in Automation Technology will give the student knowledge in the methods and techniques of planning, constructing and using modern systems of process control and automation. Both model-based and data-based methods are covered. The curricula include the application of machine learning methods for industrial automation and studies of intelligent systems. Specific applications include data-driven fault detection, automatic event classification and techniques for predictive maintenance.
The Master’s degree programme in Automation Technology (60 ECTS) consists of degree specific professional studies (30 ECTS) and a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS).
The studies are designed for students who are already working. Tuition in the Master's degree programme is organised so that studying can be combined with full-time work during a period of two years. During these two years, the studies are scheduled for two days a month from September to May. The studies consist of virtual parts and intensive course days mainly at Campus Vaasa.
The studies of the programme involve not only theoretical lectures but also practical ways of learning, laboratory assignments and hands-on exercises in innovative learning environments.
The learning process is characterised by a strong integration of real working life problems and development projects. The thesis work is realised as a research and development project related to working life.
The Master’s thesis comprises of 30 ECTS. The Master’s thesis phase the student plans and implements a development project in and/or for real working life, typically for his/her employee organisation, applying case specific research and/or development approaches. In the Master’s thesis student completes an original research and contributes to knowledge and understanding in the field of automation.
Alternatives for the thesis are for example contributing to research work in the university community at the campus, development projects for the laboratory research equipment or studies regarding solving industrial control and automation tasks with the industry or working life.
The degree programme in Automation Technology provides the opportunity for a broad interdisciplinary career. After graduation with a special emphasis on machine learning methods and intelligent system understanding, you will be qualified to work in various expert, development, and management positions in an international industrial environment in automation and control. The education also offers an excellent basis for a career in research or product development.
A Master’s degree in Automation Technology correspond to the level EQF 7 in the European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has taken the Master’s degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications.

The focus, study contents and ways of implementation of the programme are planned together with the working life interest groups. Close contacts and co-operation with the working life also continue in programme implementation and continuous development.
Postgraduate study opportunities
With a Master´s degree, students are able to continue to university post-graduate (licentiate/doctoral) studies, however universities may at their own discretion have specific admission requirements for post-graduate studies that must be met in addition to a completed Master’s degree.
