Common studies in plant cultivation
Course-specific competence: The student shall be familiar with and understand the connection between physiology, handling and technology pertaining the post-harvesting period of garden plants from harvesting till consumption. The student shall acquire basic knowledge of biochemistry and physiology and be familiar with such structures of garden plants which are of importance regarding the post-harvesting handling and storage. The student shall be able to account for different kinds of techniques in connection with the distribution and storage, e.g. drying, preservation, cooling down and adjustment of air humidity. The student shall be able to determine how pre-harvesting factors and genetic material, e.g. various environmental factors and handling in connection with distribution and storage, affect the quality and keeping qualities of cultivated horticultural products. The student shall be able to account for the quality criteria for horticultural products as well for the pertinent controlling measures. The student shall understand the importance of various products on the human health and foodstuff safety. The student shall be familiar with the current legislations in the field and with the voluntary certifications with reference to foodstuff safety, traceability and production systems.
