Course-specific competence: "The student knows the basics of plant systematics, how to identify plants on the basis of their morphology and knows how literature is used as assistance in the identification

The student is able to identify and name our most common wild plants.

The student understands the connection between habitat factors and existing vegetation in wild habitats.

The student must be able to identify the seeds of the most common cultivated plants used in agricultural and horticultural production in Finland and know the basic botany and production biology of cultivated plants.

The student must be able to account for the different parts and functions of a plant cell, the structure and functions of a leaf, stem and root and the central plant physiological functions including e.g. xylem and phloem transports in the plant.

The student shall be able to give an account of the photosynthesis and respiration of plants.

The student shall be familiar with the various winter strategies plants have.

The student shall be familiar with the basics of genetics and plant breeding.
