|Course-specific competence: ||"The student knows how to identify soil types and assess the fertility of arable land, understands and is able to report on the most important particulars of earth and soil types and to perform soil analysis.|
The student is familiar with the different factors which have had an effect on the Fennoscandian soil types and their development and realizes how different climate factors affect the formation of soil in Northern Europe.
The student is able to define soil types according to the Finnish classification system and assess which demands different soil types put, under different conditions, on the tillage of soil.
The student understands the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of soil, knows the reasons for acidation and is able to assess the consequences of lime dressing.
The student is able to explain the concept soil fertility and knows how to take appropriate measures in order to maintain the soil fertility.
The student is familiar with the most common production environments, materials and methods of the garden sector as well as different cultivation substrates and their characteristics
