Mido Taha, Bachelor of Health Care, Nursing

In short: Tell us about your profession, how you got that profession and factors that impacted your choice of profession?

I’m a Registered Nurse, working currently with Vaasa City’s Home-Hospital Team. I used to work as a graphic designer & art director in an advertising agency, but I was not happy in my job, so I decided to quit and pursue a career I had more passion for, and something that would keep me more active than sitting behind a computer 10 - 15 hours a day. I had also taken several first aid courses with the Lebanese Red Cross when I lived in Lebanon and some other medical courses in Saudi Arabia as well, just for the love of it, and with the influence of my wife, who is also a nurse, I decided to study nursing so I could someday work in emergency care or even disaster crisis response.

Muhieddine Taha2The best things about your profession?

The best thing about nursing, is the gratitude that you get when you help others in their life, even without getting thanked, you know you helped make someone’s life better or at least less painful, and that gives you a sense of value.

How has your education impacted your choice of profession and how you got to that profession? / Do you feel that your education has been of value to your professional life?

Well it was actually one of my assigned clinical practices as a student that I got to train with the Home-Hospital Team, and from that practice, they liked me and asked me if I would like to do some shifts as a Temp Nurse (Vikarie), and so I worked with them several short term contracts until I graduated, and then I got offered longer contracts after I graduated, still as a Temp Nurse though. And of course my education played a big part, because my knowledge and competence which I demonstrated at my practice, is part of the reason why earned the trust of responsibilities from my supervisors and coworkers.

What do you miss the most from your time studying?

Mostly I miss hanging out with classmates, and also the practical classes, they were the most fun.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to apply for work as a paramedic, & in the Emergency ward. I also plan to apply for the Red Cross disaster response team, and maybe later do a masters in Disaster Nursing.
