Master of Engineering, Automation Technology

The degree title is Master of Engineering and the extention of the studies are 60 ECTS. The degree programme is located in Vaasa.

Study objectives

The Master’s degree programme is designed for the professional engineer who wants to deepen his or her knowledge and understanding of the methods and possibilities of modern automation and control systems. The student will study automation and control both on a theoretical level and on a practical level – learning to design, test and implement control, supervisory and automation systems.

A special emphasis is put on the use of machine learning methods in automation and control and the study of intelligent systems.

Study content

Studies in Automation Technology will give the student knowledge in the methods and techniques of planning, constructing and using modern systems of process control and automation. The principles and methods of advanced model-based control systems are introduced. Both model-based and data-based methods are treated in the curricula. The curricula also include the application of machine learning methods for industrial automation and studies of intelligent systems.

Studies

The Master’s degree programme in Automation Technology (60 ECTS) consists of degree specific professional studies (30 ECTS) and a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS).

The studies are designed for students who are already working. Tuition in the Master's degree programme is organised so that studying can be combined with full-time work during a period of two years. During these two years, the studies are scheduled for two days a month from September to May. The studies consist of virtual parts and intensive course days mainly at Campus Vaasa. 

The studies of the programme involve not only theoretical lectures but also pratical ways of learning, laboratory assignments and hands-on exercises in innovative learning environments.

The learning process is characterised by a strong integration of real working life problems and development projects. The thesis work is realised as a research and development project related to working life.

Final project

The Master’s thesis comprises of 30 ECTS. The Master’s thesis phase the student plans and implements a development project in and/or for real working life, typically for his/her employee organisation, applying case specific research and/or development approaches. In the Master’s thesis student completes an original research and contributes to knowledge and understanding in the field of automation.

Alternatives for the thesis are for example contributing to research work in the university community at the campus, development projects for the laboratory research equipment or studies regarding solving industrial control and automation tasks with the industry or working life.

Career Prospects

The degree programme in Automation Technology offers its students an opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary career. After completing the programme, the graduates are qualified to work in different expert, development, marketing and management positions in an international industrial environment regarding the field of supervision, control and automation. The programme may also offer an excellent basis for careers in research and academic professions.

Qualification

A Master’s degree in Automation Technology correspond to the level EQF 7 in the European Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.

Under the Finnish legislation, a person who has taken the Master’s degree is qualified for posts or positions for which the qualification requirement is a second-cycle higher education degree. In some cases, the qualification requirement also includes the completion of studies in certain specified fields of study. The degree falls under the Article 11 of the Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the recognition of professional qualifications.

With a Master´s degree, students are able to continue to university post-graduate (licentiate/doctoral) studies, however universities may at their own discretion have specific admission requirements for post-graduate studies that must be met in addition to a completed Master’s degree.
